Madeira is famous for its levada walks — but not all of them are baby-friendly. Some hug cliff edges with no railings, while others are flat, shaded, and perfect for a carrier or even an all-terrain pushchair. Here are our top picks:
Levada dos Balcões (Ribeiro Frio)
One of the easiest and most rewarding walks on the island. Flat, well-maintained, and only 1.4 km round trip, ending with jaw-dropping views over the central mountains. Ideal for a soft-structured carrier.
Levada do Furado (partial route)
A longer, more shaded forest walk. We recommend only doing the first accessible section with a baby, as later parts get narrow and steep.
Levada dos Cedros (Paul da Serra / Fanal)
Gentle terrain through Fanal’s mystical laurel forest — magical for photos, and calm enough for little ones napping in a carrier.
Trails to Avoid With Babies
– Vereda do Areeiro (Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo) — steep, narrow, cliffside
– Caldeirão Verde — tunnels, waterfalls, and slippery rockssoft structured carrier is far safer than a stroller for most Madeira trails — the terrain is rarely stroller-friendly beyond paved city areas.
